Glaciar Universidad: the ice giant of the O'Higgins Cordillera
Glaciar Universidad is one of the largest glaciers in Chile outside Patagonia's Southern Ice Fields. Located above the Tinguiririca River, it combines ice caves, volcanic rock and monumental silence. Season: September to February.
Glaciar Universidad is one of the largest glaciers in Chile outside the Patagonian Ice Fields. It stretches across the upper reaches of the Tinguiririca River, in the O'Higgins Cordillera, at more than 3,500 metres (11,500 feet) above sea level. The same river that waters Colchagua's vineyards is born from this ancient ice.
Visiting it is one of the most silent and monumental experiences the region has to offer — and very few visitors to the valley ever make the trip.
What is Glaciar Universidad
Glaciers are masses of ice formed by the compaction of snow over centuries. Glaciar Universidad has been accumulating ice for thousands of years in the high cordillera of O'Higgins. It is one of the most extensive glaciers in the country at mid-latitude — located much further north than the Patagonian glaciers most people are familiar with.
What makes it remarkable is its landscape: it is not simply white ice. The glacier combines surfaces of bluish ice, dark volcanic rock walls, caves formed by meltwater and a system of crevasses that shifts with each season.
How to get there
Access is from San Fernando, capital of the province of Colchagua (142 km / 88 miles from Santiago, about 100 minutes by car). From there, take route I-45 towards Termas del Flaco, covering approximately 80 km of mountain road.
The final stretch requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle or specific transport hired in San Fernando.
Season and mandatory guide
Season: September to February.
A Sernatur-registered guide is mandatory. The glacier's terrain changes constantly: summer thaw opens new crevasses, alters trails and can trigger minor rockfalls. A certified guide knows the safe routes and the updates for each season.
Adventure tourism operators in San Fernando and Santa Cruz offer full-day excursions with transport, guide and equipment included.
What you will find
- Blue ice caves: formed by meltwater that carves the glacier from within. At certain times of year, light filtering through the ice creates an almost impossible turquoise colour
- Rock and ice landscape: a striking visual contrast between the volcanic black of the cordillera and the white-blue of the glacier
- Silence: at this altitude, the only constant sounds are the wind and water dripping from the ice
- Views of the valley: on clear days, the view from the glacier extends all the way to the central valley of Colchagua
For families travelling with children
The glacier excursion is not suitable for young children (under 8 years old) or for people with reduced mobility. The trail has considerable elevation gain and technical sections.
For families travelling with older children or teenagers: it is perfectly feasible and often becomes the most lasting memory of the entire trip.
